Shimla, known as the summer capital of India. When it comes to Shimla an image full of snow capped mountains, apples and the chilling environment of hills comes in mind. Shimla which attracts tens of thousands of people to explore its beauty has the another face wrapped with some real Indian ghost stories in India. Let’s explore the haunted side of the Shimla hills.
- The Charleville Mansion- Charleville Mansion is more than century-old castle which was built in the kingdom of British. The haunted story of this mansion is one of the most haunted places in Shimla is also more than century old. As legend says, in 1913 Victor Bayley was appointed as assistant secretary of railways at Shimla. He was in search of a property which fits in his budget and his search led him to this Mansion. Prior to them, an army officer resides in this castle who left it after experiencing some paranormal activities. Bayley was well aware of that incident but still, he and his wife moved to stay in this mansion and they hired an Indian servant which was very honest to them. One day Bayley and his wife went for a party handing over all the responsibilities of the castle as he was able to earn their trust. The servant saw a shade of a gentleman who was walking to the upwards through the stairs without turning and answering to the servant. Servant chased him and saw the gentleman entered in the room mysteriously and soon listened to a loud thud and breaking of the goods. When servant opens the room he saw every piece of goods was not in their previous condition and disappearing of the gentleman in the air left him completely shocked. The servant told Bayley the complete incident the very next day he returned to the home and soon Bayley with his wife vacated the mansion. Although this property is owned by an Indian who renovated the mansion completely but still people reports about encountering the shadows in the mansion.
- Dukhani House- The haunted story behind this is an old gentleman who roams in the house in an outfit of a gown. As per the narration of Sir John Smith, he was once a guest at this house when Bucky organized a party of his seventieth birthday and invited him. He joined Bucky’s room to stay and was tired badly which helped him to sleep as soon as his head hits the pillow while Bucky was snoring. When Mr. Smith woke up, he saw the beautiful rays of half moon was filtering through the window and led to the garden. The flapping sound of curtain woke him up and thought should I wake up and close the window or should I lie? He decided not to take any action and sleep again. Mr. Smith figured a grey-haired old gentleman wrapped in a gown and thought he was Bucky. He asked him to shut the window and suddenly heard the Bucky’s snoring from the corner of the room. The picture of the old gentleman was very clear, he looked sad and lonely. As Mr. Smith acted towards him, he got merged into the gardens quietly. That incident makes Mr. Smith completely shocked. The very next day he researched and found that a British gentleman shot himself 40 years ago in the same room.
- Tunnel No 33 (Barog Tunnel)- Tunnel no 33 which is also known as the Barog tunnel, has been named after the railway engineer Mr. Barog. He was assigned with a project to make the tunnel on Kalka-Shimla route. He started the work on both sides of the hill in the hope that the tunnel will join with each other in the center but failed. Big amount of money and the manpower was used to build this tunnel which not delivered the desired result and the officials humiliated and penalized him to pay 1 rupee. Mr. Barog felt shamed and lived in tension and one day he committed suicide near this tunnel. Later, H.S Harrington was the in charge and made this tunnel as per the guidance of a local monk in a time span of 38 months. Natives of this tunnel believe and claims that they listen to the errie sound and mysterious occurrence of person around this tunnel and people believes this as one of the most real ghost stories in India.
- Indira Gandhi Medical College: Indira Gandhi Medical College is the largest medical set up in entire Himachal Pradesh. This hospital is widely popular among the peoples of entire Himachal Pradesh. It is quite popular for its medical practices and at the same time, it is also popular as one of the most haunted places in Shimla. It is generally believed that the spirits of people who got passed in this hospital, rules the hospital. Patients, their relatives and the medical practitioners of this hospital experienced some whispering sound in the corridor, sometimes getting stuck in the lift for hours and sometimes being pushed while taking the stairs. There are notices posted by the management on walls of this hospital especially in the staircase areas to be cautious while taking the stairs and the environment of this hospital in the night is quite scary. Even the story of an orange seller on IGMC road or connecting jungle road from this hospital is quite popular as haunted places in the locals.
- Convent of Jesus and Mary: Convent of Jesus and Mary is the prestigious educational institution for girls, located in Navbahar, Chhota Shimla. Parents take pride to send their childrens to this institution for their studies. CJM Shimla ranks as one of the most haunted places of Shimla Hills. There is more than one haunted story attached to this Institution. The most black day which gives goosebumps to the girls who study in this convent is the date 13th when it falls in Friday. It is said that on every 13th when if falls in Friday, a man riding black horse and having no head on his body comes to CJM and offers rose to the girls. He kills those who dares to deny his proposal and takes away the girl who accept his rose. A tragedy in 2012 gives fuel to the haunted story attached with CJM when two students of IVth standard found dead near the school. Parents said that they died because of the mental pressure given by the teachers for the studies. Although the actual reason of their death is still a mystery.
- Chudail Baudi: This baudi is located between Shimla highway and chhota shimla. As per local beliefs, the speed of your vehicle automatically slow down in this area irrespective of the speed you are driving or how strongly you griped the accelerator for fast driving. An old lady with open hairs who wrapped in white saree roams between the road and target the passengers especially in night. The lady asks for lift from the passers and if someone denies to offer her lift, she chase the car and sometimes sits on co drivers seat starring continously to the people. This incident taken so many life and the people believes this is no other than with who haunts this area and the way she stares at the people give people goosebumps and lose their control to the car which leads to the accident.
- Kingal Shimla Road- There is no horror story attached to this place but still it is believed as one of the haunted places of Shimla. This road is infamous for strange lighting which occurs in this road and there is no source from where the light occurs. According to the local peoples it is believed that the unearthly lights originate due to the supernatural spirits. This phenomenon is a supernatural incident or scientific reason is yet to be confirmed.
