  5. Chand Baori

    Haunted Chand Baori

    Chand Baori

Chand Baori is located in Abhaneri Village, few kilometers north of Sikandra town, known as the heart of Dausa district, located on the Jaipur-Agra National Highway (NH-11). Chand Baori is one of the haunted places in Rajasthan and the story behind it is really interesting. It is said that Thakur Jai Singh rode on a horse from Jodhpur towards Ranasi village with his servants to see the famous fair of Gangaur. On the way, the horses of the servants went far ahead and Thakur Jai Singh was left behind. The King’s horse was very tired, he was also thirsty. Seeing a pond on the way, Thakur Jai Singh stopped his horse and came down and approached the pond to feed the horse water. At that time, midnight had passed. As the horse moved forward to drink water, Jai Singh saw a figure on the banks of the pond. The figure immediately changed into a man. Thakur was very surprised. The man said – I am a ghost. I cannot touch this pond due to a curse. I am thirsty too. Thakur Jai Singh boldly gave water to that soul. Seeing Thakur’s boldness and kindness, the ghost accepted his submission and said – I will fulfill whatever will be your wish. Thakur Jai Singh said that for me you will have to build a beautiful city along with a stronghold, palace, and water bath. The ghost said – I accept your wish, but I will not do this work directly. Whatever you build throughout the day, it will increase a hundred times more at night, but you will not tell this secret to anyone. My work will end on the same day this secret will be revealed. Construction began in the year 1600. From the very next day, the palace and the stepwell buildings began to be built. The people of that village were amazed. Mystical sounds of throwing stones started coming in the night, day by day construction work proceeded at a fast pace. One day when Jai Singh’s wife asked the secret of the expansion of the palace and the stepwell, Thakur flatly refused to tell her. At this, the queen was angry and started a hunger strike. Queen’s condition deteriorated due to fasting for several days. Looking at the queen’s condition, Thakur reveals his secret. All the construction work stopped the same night after Thakur did this. As a result, the seven-storey palace remained only two storeys and the last part of the water bath, that wall also remained incomplete, which remains as it is today.
